Slow summer 2016

We took this summer off from planting a huge garden.  It was probably just as well due to the lack of consistent rain.  Watering is a huge factor since we are on a well.  My 2 year old grandson fell and broke his femur this Spring, so I spent a lot of time taking care of him while he was in a cast.  And then I fell in May and broke my ankle!  Good Grief!!  Almost ruined my whole summer.

But we still planted tomatoes (my favorite) and have enjoyed a steady supply.  I love fresh sliced tomatoes with my scrabbled eggs for breakfast.  We were also gifted about 3 gallons of figs (another one of my favorites) and I made jam with those.  Yummy!  This year I put the figs in the food processor for my jam because my grand-daughter doesn’t like pieces of fruit in her jam, LOL!  It got her seal of approval.

 

2013 Garlic Harvest Time

Our garlic patch has done really well this year. While we did not have a huge amount of garlic, I was very pleased with the size of the cloves and how easy they were to dig up and collect the seedlings for replanting. We replanted half of them in the original spot and half of them in a new location just to see if the results would be better. The original patch of garlic was actually found growing wild on this property over 20 years ago and I didn’t even know what it was at first. I thought it was some kind of flowering bulb, lol.

Strawberries everywhere!

We are well into the strawberry season and we are putting up 1-2 gallons a day in the freezer!  I have made 3 batches of strawberry jam and lost count on the blenders of strawberry margaritas.  We have been able to sell some, but mostly, I am keeping them for myself 🙂

February 10th we have new baby goats!

Our female goat, Artie delivered two solid black baby boys during the night of February 10th, 2013.  I knew she was close but during a rainstorm!  Maybe that is what stirred her up.  Anyway, they are cute as a button!  I will get pictures up soon. 

2012-2013 Winter

Well this winter weather 2012-2013 has been a roller coaster ride in middle Georgia.  I love the spring-time weather but we really need a good freeze to help cut down on the summer time bugs around here.  The cabin is coming along slowly but nicely.  The walls and ceiling are a hodge-podge (sp) of reclaimed lumber but keeping with the cabin “feel.”  The woofers are loving it and get that “camping-out” feeling.  We are enjoying teaching them what we know about growing organic vegetables and raising animals but we are also learning from our volunteers too.  So many bright young people just setting out in this world with a plan to grow and learn about their food.  Eat healthy!  Sandy

Potbellied stove

I am so excited to have the installation of our potbellied stove completed in the wwoofer cabin! This was a project that tooks some time to gather parts, research to make sure it was properly and safely installed and it is doing a fine job of heating the cabin. This antique stove belonged to my great-grandmother and she would be proud to know that it is still being put to good use and still in the family! Picture soon!
